Ben Lui - 1130m
This is a magnificent mountain especially seen from the A82 as you head
in towards Tyndrum. It comes out from behind the north ridge of Beinn
Duhbchraig and if it has some snow on it, looks like any of the worlds
great mountains. By far the best way of doing the hill is from Dalrigh
car park south of Tyndrum and walking in through Cononish Glen. It's a
fair walk in but the hill looks fantastic as you approach. There's no
real climbing at this stage so the hill just keeps getting bigger.
The
obvious features of Ben Lui is firstly the 'double' top and secondly
the impressive corrie, into which you are about to walk. From the car
park the route takes you along a landrover track to be base of the
hill. From here you cross a large stream, difficult if swollen, and the
climb starts immediately up the obvious footpath. Once in the corrie
the decision has to be made as to which side to go up. Each is as
difficult ( easy ) as the other. A point of interest is the wreckage of
a Lockheed Hudson ( April 1942 ) which will be tripped over just off
the Eastern ridge. If your rucksack is big enough you could bring home
a WWII 9 cylinder radial engine. This last stage of the day is really
interesting walking, you will love it. If you are blessed with a clear
sky then the view will be enough to hold you there for a while I'm
sure. The decent will be quite steep but not overly and due care should
be taken. And finally enjoy the walk back to the car. The other way of
doing the hill is from Glen Lochy, though why I'm not sure, it just
becomes another mind numbing slog IMO. Ben Lui can be done in the round
of four munros Ben Lui, Beinn a' Chleibh, Ben Oss and finally Beinn
Dubhchraig.
